HIGH
SPEED, SEXY LOOKS, EVERYDAY PRACTICALITY:
My new everyday car is a 1991 PEUGEOT 605 SR 3.0 Automatique
with GUTMANN ROYAL
LOOK body kit and lowered suspension. It's
the usual story (for me, apparently). To keep the now almost
immaculate 505 V6
away from the salty roads during winter, I looked out for a
new winter car. The sensible choice: A PEUGEOT 605 with
a V6 engine and automatic gearbox. Should be on
every one's hit list of cars.
|
BUYING:
After looking at overpriced wrecks, I found this car
with the sporting body kit and modified suspension set-up at
the same local PEUGEOT dealer who not only sold it to
its first owner and did all modifications for him, but
who sold also my '77
504 Berline when new...
I'm now the third (and last!) owner, because after driving it
for about three months I loved it so much that I decided to
use it every day, so the 505 V6 sees only summer use.

ENGINE:
ZPJ V6 engine, 2975cc, bore / stroke 93 x 73 mm, 167
bhp @ 5600rpm, SIEMENS / BENDIX injection and ignition, catalytic
converter. Attached is a 4-speed ZF 4HP18 automatic gearbox
PERFORMANCE:
Top speed 220 kph, acceleration 0-100 kph in 9,9 s, fuel consumption
about 11 l/100 km. This makes the 605 SR 3.0 a great touring
car...
GUTMANN ROYAL
LOOK: Originally
fitted, with side skirts, big front and boot-lid spoilers fits
the 605 well. The car sits 30 mm lower on EIBACH springs,
and gutmann alloys with FULDA 225/50 ZR16 rubber...

RUNNING
REPORT: The 605 had only 103.000 km on the
clock, and, serviced by the dealer up to 60.000 km, was in a
good overall condition, although a bit neglected.
After a good polish and clean-up inside, a MUSKETIER
front spoiler to replace the cracked original, new specialist
made carpets, original leather steering wheel, new tyres, new
radio and powered antenna, new headlights (€ 230!!!
each, that hurts) plus both park light units, ignition components,
fuel filter, fluids changed, all engine mountings replaced,
front & rear suspension overhauled, new track rod ends,
a new thermostat, a new Bosch ignition module and new front
brakes, it just runs great

BUT
NOTHING IS EASY ON A PEUGEOT 605: Mechanics and electronics
really are for the advanced. You'll need at least a workshop
manual (if have one on CD ROM now), a diagnosis tool to read
out the car's fault memory (bought mine via eBay), the right
tools - and experience. 605s are cheap to buy, but expensive
to run. Still want one? Then see ownership

IMPROVING:
I'm looking now for some features of the better equipped SV-model,
like the black leather interior with powered and heated
seats. Anyone know of a good interior for sale? Drop me
a note, please.
And maybe I'm on the market for one of those tasty MUSKETIER
sport exhausts...
